Not too often do you see a #10 BCAR get into a public verbal spat, but former NFL legendary coach Tony Dungy has been a bit vocal lately as political talking-heads have been stepping on his closely-held Animate values.
We’ll start with Dungy simply encouraging his fellow Americans to be thankful for United States of America. In what is described as “starting a social media debate,” Tony wrote, “Over the last few weeks we have focused on America’s faults. We must work to improve those things but today we should celebrate our country’s birthday. We enjoy a lot of blessings and I’m thankful I live in America. I pray that God will show us how to help our country grow!”
Pretty harmless, though not anymore in this day and age. Although Tony received many positive comments, there were also quite a few negative. One fellow wrote, “Coach I love you … however we can’t take a break from the devastation this country has had on Black people … us. I believe your heart to be pure with this I just don’t want us to excuse this country from the enslavement of Black people by celebrating it.”
Most celebs don’t respond to replies, but Dungy did. “No excuse. Don’t overlook things that need to be fixed. But don’t overlook blessings either. Don’t think that everything is terrible. I promise you that if you visited some other countries it would make you thankful for what we have. It’s not all good. But it’s not all bad either.” The same person than retorted, “I find it difficult to celebrate a country that doesn’t see me as a full human being that’s all. I don’t want that to take a day off.” Did Tony stop? Nope. He replied, “If we’re waiting for it to be perfect we won’t celebrate until we get to heaven. Let’s celebrate the good – and there is plenty – and work to change the bad. Which there is plenty of that too. But don’t let the negative steal your joy.”
Wow, sounding a little Michael Jacksonesque! Remember, the #10‘s nickname is the “Idealist.” They want the world to be a safe, happy place, and strive to see it through such eyes (though they easily become downcast when reality doesn’t meet their “ideals”). Good of Dungy to point to the positive and stand his ground!
But that wasn’t all. Don Lemon (#13 FCIR) of CNN a few days later went to say on national television, “Jesus Christ, admittedly, was not perfect when He was here on this earth, so why are we deifying the Founders of this country?” Needless to say, many people were left confused as to why Lemon would even make such a left-field comment. Roaring tiger Tony came back to Twitter, however, to set Don in his place. “I’m sorry Mr. Lemon but just who ‘admitted’ that Jesus Christ was not perfect here on earth? Not anyone who believes the Bible. Not anyone who trusts in Jesus as their savior. I’m not sure the point you’re making but your premise is dead wrong. That was the point in Jesus coming!”
Of course, several readers then came back at Tony after the Tweet was posted, with some saying Jesus Christ didn’t even exist. Tony wisely replied, “No debate at all on the existence of Jesus. Just look at your secular history books. Even your time is divided into BC and AD. Was that paying homage to some fictional cartoon character?”
At times it can be difficult to razz the #10 tiger (no pun intended to Mr. Woods), but if you do happen to razz one, be ready for a fight!
