How do you spend $845,000 before you even start your job? Ask former NBA player Gilbert Arenas. “I don’t remember, I spent that before the draft. You think you’re going to go Top-10, like $#&% I’m thinking millions. So I bought an Escalade, had five TVs in it, four (12″ speakers) — saw Gary Payton with the suede — had the suede on the top, suede roof.”
Gilbert ended up not being drafted in the first round, but the second, and thus began his financial woes. “So when they did my budget I could only spend $500 a month. That’s gas money. Girlfriend, two dogs, I didn’t have any money. I couldn’t even drive back and forth to the arena, so I had to stay at the arena sometimes. I slept in the arena. I was basically homeless, but I just couldn’t afford the gas all the time.”
A #2 BEAR, Arenas lead a successful career in the NBA, ending up making some $163 million by retirement. Financial acuity doesn’t usually come natural for #2s, whereas dominant Inanimate #6 “tacticians” tend to handle their expenses with more calculation. It’s hard to imagine a “homeless” NBA star, but Arenas was just that for an entire NBA season!
The moral of the story … don’t count your chickens before they hatch, especially if you’re a “live-for-today” BEAR!
