Well, Serena Williams is certainly making a impressive run in her final major debut at the U.S. Open. Williams will be retiring, in her own words, when the tournament is over, and what a ride it’s been! To be sure, Serena, since 1995 when she debuted as a professional (and Jon Niednagel had already Brain Typed her!), has stood as a shining example of just how dominant a #1 FEAR can be on Tour (which currently is primarily dominated by #13 FCIRs), joining the ranks of other #1 greats like Anna Kournikova, Lindsay Davenport, and Jennifer Capriati. Oh, and not to mention Ons Jabeur, who won Wimbledon this year (and we highlighted)!
Williams thus far has defeated Danka Kovinic in the first round and Anett Kontaveit in the second in front of exuberant crowds at Arthur Ashe Stadium. As every Brain Type enthusiast knows, #1s in particular feed off the energy of the crowd, and Williams has been loving every second of it. “I’m loving this crowd,” Williams said after her second-round match. “Oh my goodness, it’s really fantastic. There’s still a little left in me. We’ll see.”
Does anyone remember about month ago when we highlighted the honestly of golf’s Lydia Ko (#1 FEAR) when she was asked about treatment she was receiving during a match? She looked at the reporter and candidly said, “It’s that time of month.” Well, now it was Serena’s turn. When asked after the match what changed for her when she came out of the bathroom break before the final set, she replied, “I just got lighter. Use your imagination. But it wasn’t number two so …”
Whoa! Ok Serena, we get it! Thanks for keeping it real, all you #1s out there!
