Several months ago we posted an article on the newest women’s U.S. Open tennis champion, Emma Raducanu. Since that time, the talented #9 FCAR has sustained a number of injuries, despite having an extremely resilient pain threshold (in typical #9 fashion). “Since then I’ve had a lot of setbacks, one after the other. I am resilient, my tolerance is high, but it’s not easy. And sometimes I think to myself I wish I’d never won the US Open, I wish that didn’t happen.”
Wait a minute, what did Emma just say? She wishes she hadn’t won the U.S. Open?
Yes, in a recent interview, Emma confessed that success has brought on some new challenges. “When I won I was extremely naïve. What I have realized in the past two years, the tour and everything that comes with it, it’s not a very nice, trusting and safe space. You have to be on guard because there are a lot of sharks out there. I think people in the industry, especially with me because I was 19, now 20, they see me as a piggy bank.”
Indeed, of the 16 inborn Brain Types, #9s can be among the most naïve, believing the best in others while trying to put on a brave, smiley face in life. Emma went on to say, ““I was under so much pressure to perform, people had no idea what was going on and I had to have this facade, to keep everything inside. It has been really hard.” One can almost hear the echoes of gymnastics and fellow FCAR star Simon Biles, who in 2021 notoriously bowed out of the Olympics over mental health concerns and feeling “the weight of the world” on her shoulders. While more thinking, Inanimate Brain Types might typically have an easier time dealing with adversity in a more objective, logical manner, the #9 FCAR, who is both dominant Conceptual (imagining their own reality) and Animate (personalizing matters) can literally break down under the weight of unpleasant reality. Without a good, positive support team providing uplifting vibes, #9s can quickly burnout, physically and mentally. Again, in Emma’s own words, “The tour is completely brutal.”
