So last month Dolphins’ star Tyreek Hill (#6 BEIR) had a run-in with the law while on his way to a game in which he was detained and eventually forced to the ground by police. Camera footage was released showing Hill speeding by cops and being pulled over. When they approach the vehicle and tap on his window, Hill tells them to stop knocking on it, and to quickly “do what they gotta do” and give him a ticket. He then rolls his window back up, and the officer tells him to put it down. Hill rolls down his window slightly and responds, “Don’t tell me what to do.” The officers then take him out of the vehicle, after which the verbal spat continues, with Hill telling them to be careful with his knees (as he just had surgery) and one of the officers responds, “Really, what a coincidence. Did you have surgery on your ears when we told you to put the window down?”
Hill has since been interviewed and says he’s “still shocked” by the incident. The video can be seen on any news outlet. At the end of the day, Hill was clearly not compliant, and would have done better taking a less “Mike Tyson” combative approach. One tidbit from Niednagel’s book reads, “Sometimes resistant to authority, BEIRs love their freedom.” And again, “If BEIRs learn submission and self-control they can fit into society well. If not, they can find themselves behind bars, losing the freedom they value so highly.”
Needless to say, #6 Hill has been a star for years now. He has been selected to the Pro Bowl in each of his eight seasons in the league, won Super Bowl LIV with the Chiefs, and was named to the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team as a punt returner. While the number of BEIRs in the league has certainly diminished over the last few decades, Tyreek Hill is a reminder that they still have what it takes to be among the best in the NFL.
