He was the heartfelt founder of Focus on the Family whose comforting voice could be heard on radio stations the country over. Dr. James Dobson, who also advised five U.S. presidents over the decades, died at the age of 89 on Thursday. A unique #3 FEAL, Dobson was also a psychologist widely regarded as one of the most influential Christian leaders of the past 50 years.
The #3 can also be known as “The Mother Hen”, and such was Dobson. Strengthening the family unit was his battle cry, and through his radio program he reached millions on more than 4,000 stations across North America. As already mentioned, he counseled such U.S. presidents as Ronald Reagan (#15 FCIL), George H. W. Bush (#11 FCAL), George W. Bush (#15 FCIL), Bill Clinton (#15 FCIL) and Donald Trump (#15 FCIL). Folks also may recognize Dobson for his connection to former NBA star Pistol Pete Maravich (#6 BEIR). In 1988, Dobson was with Maravich when Pete suddenly collapsed on the basketball floor. Later it was discovered that Maravich lacked a left coronary artery to his heart. Dobson was said to be deeply affected by his death, reflecting on the fragility of life and the importance of faith.
Though a dominant Animate, James Dobson held true to his core beliefs, which included marriage, strongly stating several years ago, “If traditional marriage is not the law of the land, the institution of the family will cease to exist.” Yet he was always known for his kindness, again once stating, “One of the most important responsibilities in the Christian life is to care about others, smile at them, and be a friend to the friendless.”
And finally, in his own words, “My legacy doesn’t matter. It isn’t important that I be remembered. It’s important that when I stand before the Lord, he says, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant.’ I want to finish strong.”
