Wow! After skimming recent headlines one would think the letter ‘W’ in WNBA stood for ‘Wild’. Currently, the basketball organization is trying to decide whether individuals who have any XY chromosome should be allowed to play in their league. Oh, and these individuals are also commonly known as ‘men’. Former NBA players Enes Kanter Freedom (#13 FCIR) and Royce White (#13 FCIR) have both declared themselves candidates for the 2027 draft, and in an attempt to simply delay controversy, the WNBA stated recently that “it will approach future conversations thoughtfully” in alignment with its values, while strongly denouncing “bad-faith efforts to use these topics to demean or marginalize others.” Interesting.
Transgender activist Caitlyn Jenner (#15 FCIL) says there’s a simple solution: “…XX, you’re in. XY you’re out. It’s that simple.” Mind you, again, this is famous athlete Caitlyn Jenner, who transitioned from man to woman more than ten years ago.
In other wild news, Angel Reese (#1 FEAR) of the Atlanta Dream is being praised as a legendary rebounder, compared by some to Dennis Rodman (#1) and Charles Barkley (#1). Perhaps that’s a bit of a stretch, say other critics. It’s true that Reese leads the WNBA in rebounds per game, and that she did reach 1,000 career rebounds in 79 games (10 games faster than the former record), but several of those ‘rebounds’ have actually been ‘mebounds’. That is, she rebounded her own missed shots (and she has 25 more of them than the next-highest player in the league). Now remember, Reese is a #1, so it’s no surprise to Brain Type enthusiasts that she leads the league in boards, whether those were true rebounds or not. Still, while she is gifted at boxing out and pulling the ball down, putting the ball back into the basket has been a bit of problem for her. In fact, in her last match against the Indiana Fever, she blew an easy layup that led to a costly overtime loss.
Ironically, Dennis Rodman, once upon a time, had a similar problem. In high-school he “couldn’t even make a layup,” and teammate Isiah Thomas (#1 FEAR) recalled that during pregame layup lines Dennis would often stand under the rim instead of participating. To be sure, Rodman overcame the handicap, but it took a bit more practice for the gross-motor dominant hoopster (remember that #1s are less adept with the fine-motors, which involve the hands).
We suppose the one upside for men being allowed in the league is perhaps more viewership. Other than that, in Jenner’s own terms, those with the XX chromosome will no doubt truly suffer at the hands of the XYs.
